1920's Entertainment

The 1920's in entertainment was a great time. There were many revolutionary ways to entertain during the 20's.




Film
Hollywood vastly expanded in the 1920's, with color films beginning to premiere. The people of that time were amazed at the so-called "vivid colors" of the late 20's. In 1927, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, famous for their presentation of the Academy Awards (Oscars) since 1927, was formed. Famous actors from the 1920's included John Barrymore, Charlie Chaplin, and Lon Chaney. The first Oscar was for the film "Wings", the first film with partial sound was "The Jazz Singer", and the first film fully with sound was "Lights of New York". The two biggest movie producers at that time were MGM and Paramount Productions. Overall, the 20's was a time of many new features in film.


Radio
The radio world was extremely popular in the 20's. The whole family would sit around the radio and listen for entertainment. The first commercial radio stations in the US were WWJ in Detroit, MI, and KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1922, BBC begin broadcasting from the United Kingdom. The Federal Radio Commission was set up in 1926.

Literature
Books were a form of entertainment in the 20's. Many books were published during this decade. Some more famous books during this time were: The Great Gatsby- F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ulysses- James Joyce, and Beyond The Horizon- Eugene O'Neill (Pulitzer Prize Winner). Books were a good source of entertainment, especially for children.The genres of Suspense and Romance were common.

Sports Games
Sports could be considered as a form of entertainment. If you had the money, you could go to a sports game. Famous sports events of the 20's: In 1920 the Negro Baseball League was formed, in 1920, the NFL was formed, and in 1927, the first Ryder Cup (golf) was played.
